Planning: Ideas For Photographs

My local village; Barnetby, is full of perfect locations for which I could have my model posing in. such as: The pub, I feel the pub would be a good location as it would show my model as a normal every day person who is old enough and mature enough to spend some time in the pub. The Train Station, this would be a perfect location as it would show my model as a person that travels a lot because of his passion for music, it would also fit with my main DPS article which is about his rise to fame. Another location i would include is my model in the middle of a field, this would fit well as my star grew up very isolated it was only him and his guitar for the most part.

Analysis Of Responses In My TA Research

Question 1 asked my TA how hey consumed print media. 9  people said that the bought a magazine and read it where as 11 people said that they use the internet. To make sure I appeal to the widest TA possible I will print my magazine for people to buy in shops, I will also provide social media links for the people who prefer to view online.

My 2nd question asked my TA "If you don't buy/download magazines, why?" 2 people left the question blank as they felt it did not apply to them. 3 people said that they did not enjoy reading, 5 people said that they would rather look online. I could try to increase the amount of graphology in my magazine to appeal to the people that don't enjoy reading

Question 3 asked "What would encourage you to buy or download a magazine?" 8 answered if it had evidence of gossip on it, 9 said if it included free things, 3 said that they would buy or download if the image of the main star was good quality

This shows me that I should focus on having clear evidence of gossip in my work and I should think about giving away things for free.

Question 4 inquired from my TA "What were your first thought of my masthead?"
All responses were positive e.g "Good", "Interesting", "v.good" and "Very much so" these responses allow me to understand that my masthead is interesting and appealing and I should not look into having to change it.

Question 5 asked " Does the sell line help you make sense of the masthead?"
All responses were "Yes". These responses tell my that my sell line was a good choice as it help make sense of any confusion that the masthead may of created.

Question 6 asked "Do you like my models pose?"
18 answered yes. 2 answered no, as a majority of the answers were yes I will not look at changing the image. however, I will look into using different poses of people throughout the magazine.

Question 7 asked "Do you like the color scheme?"
All responses were yes. This tells me that I should not change my color scheme as it seems to be popular with my TA.

Question 8 asked " Is my contents page easy to navigate?"
16 said yes. 4 said no.
This 3D chart really puts in proportion for me how many 4 actually is in comparison to 16, after viewing this I will attempt to make my contents page easier to navigate.

Question 9 asked my TA " Does the main story appeal to you?"
16 responded yes. 4 responded no. Taking this response into consideration when I planned my DPS article I have attempted to incorporate other aspects that will appeal to multiple mebers of my TA.

Question 10 asked "What would you like to see as an exclusive on the front cover"
18 said they would want a exclusive free download. 1 said tickets to a live performance. 1 answered gossip. Due to this response I have included all three aspects of this in my front cover. I have done this to ensure that I appeal to as much of my TA as possible.

Research: TA Profile

Samuel Moverley's Slidely by Slidely Slideshow

Applying Blumler and Katz:

Diversion
This meets TA desire for an escape from everyday problems and routines. I need to add in possible features and details that offer gossip, escapism and something for the funatics.

Personal Relationships: My article on my DPS will allow the reader to form a personal relationship with my artist as the story is a emotional journey through his life.

Personal Identity: in my Q+A Connor displays how he talks, this can influence people who follow him as a fan base to be more similar to him, it can also influence people who want to succeed just like he has.

Applying Denis McQuail:

Information: My main article will appeal to people that want to find out information about other peoples life and people who are seeking advice. it will also satisfy curiosity and general interests.

Education: My TA will subliminally gain advice on how to succeed by reading about his journey

Research: TA Profiling

In my opinion I think this magazine is aimed at youthful teenage boys and some girls. Firstly, the main photograph is of the main singer of the band shouting into his mic and pulling his tank top, this creates a rough image that would appeal to young impressionable males. By showing his tattoos they have made it appealing to the males as some males will want tattoos themselves. They have also appealed to young females as there will be a section of their TA that finds men with tattoos attractive, women who think this will more than likely buy the magazine purely for the graphology. Personally, I would describe the front cover to be quite messy, there are lots of pictures, feature stories, and splats. However, by including this they have appealed to a very young audience as the younger audiences will be more appealed to this style of front cover. Younger people like to have lots to read about and know the gossip, by showing all of these things all over the front cover they are showing young people how much is in the magazine.

I feel that this issue will be targeted rebellious women as it portrays Lily Allen as a "unconventional" woman in most magazines would be portrayed for the benefit of the male viewer. However this magazine is trying to show women as powerful figures that other women should look up to, the colour red connotes passion and strength. The cover shows her representation of women is more modern and the representation of men traditional as the cover story bout a man is in a stereotypical blue colour. The cover line includes a profanity which shows me the are targeting older women as they will not b condoning searing to young children, they layout of the page also indicates this as it has a very clean look, magazines that appeal to young children contain lots of different pictures and stories

This type of magazine would appeal to aspiring rappers who want to know all of the latest news in the game. The main colour scheme is black and gold which indicates riches which would appeal to a majority young artists/rap listeners. All of the models and names are males which shows that this issue of XXL is male dominated which shows that this version will be targeted towards the male gender. the layout of the page is fairly simplistic which makes me feel as if it is targeted towards older males as from my research i have found that young people prefer covers that have lots going on where as older people prefer a more clean simple look. Denis McQuail suggest that the motivation for the audience of this magazine could be for integration and social interaction;
Gaining insight into circumstances of others.
Identifying with other, a sense of belonging.
Finding a basis for social interaction.
Having a substitute for real life companion
Helping to carry out social roles
Enabling one to connect with friends, family and social groups.

Planning: My Star Image

The name of my star is Connor MacMillan. He is an 18-year-old acoustic guitar player from Maryland, United States. My article will be about his rise to fame, it will include all of the key points in his past that made him the musician he is today. An example of some of the things I will say in my story is that his dad walked out on him and his mother when he was a child which sent his mother into a life of drugs and alcohol. This style of life that his mother had adopted had led to Connor being physically and mentally abused by his mother and the grown men she slept with. after describing to the audience key points of his like if will go on to explain to them where it all got him and how it has moulded him as a person.

Next to the picture of him I was thinking of placing a pull quote, a few ideas for this are:

"I plan to eat with the people I starved with"

"How can the sky be the limit when there are footprints on the moon"

"My heart says yeah, but can't convince the rest of me"

To finish off my DPS, I will include a small section that is a Q + A, I will do this as I believe it gives the audience a private insight further into his life, they will find out information exclusive only to my magazine.

How My DPS Research Has Influenced My Research

The use of a 3 color scheme is simple yet refined which i feel gives a professional look for the DPS. I really like the use of dark tones as I feel it keeps it serious and the colors can go. The graphology and what they represent is amazing for example; the unlucky number 13 on poker chips. from the DPS pages i have analysed I feel like I will also devote one whole page to my star as I feel it truly shows their importance to the magazine. I think that the colors such as white used for a background give a nice clean & refined look which is something I think I will incorporate in my own work.

Research: Analysis Of DPS - 3 -

The main article stretches over numerous pages however it begins on page 40. Three columns of text are split across the two pages with one on one side and two on the other which is unconventional as most magazines usually have set blocks of 2 columns.

The two columns of text on page 40 fill a majority of the page, only leaving a small slither at the top of the page open. There is only a small gap between the two columns on page 40. The main article is written aligned to the left-hand side. However. The pull quote at the side of page 41 is aligned to the right-hand side which allows it to stand out from the rest of the text on the page which in turn draws the reads attention to it when they firstly look at the page. The font of the main body text is in Cambria (Body) and is in a black colour as it is a white background, and these are contrasting colours. The size of the text is around 12 point. However, there is one drop capital this is a lot bigger compared to the article itself.

The pull quote is placed on the page next to the page that has her photo which is unusual for me to see as when I have looked through magazines I have noticed the pull quote is usually right next to the artist. The font used on the pull quote is different to the font used in the main body text; this is great as it allows me to distinguish from the main body text quickly. The quotation marks on the pull quote are in the same size, as the pull quote itself, by making them larger it would grab the attention of the reader so I may consider doing this.

The shot of Gabrielle is a medium to long shot as it includes her whole upper body and stops at her pelvis, however her lower half is covered by a guitar. The image isn’t too bright; it uses studio lighting but it's not too bright, her clothing is quite plain which is good as it's not too hard on the eyes and that complements the text itself. The picture itself is similar to the front cover which creates synergy throughout the pages. I feel that this picture suits the TA as it looks immaculate and refined and I expect that's what the target audience of this magazine will be themselves. This DPS page only incorporates 1 picture of her. However, this image takes up a full page and also goes onto a small section of the other page, this hints to the reader of her importance.

On all left-hand side pages, the page number is written before the word acoustic. On all right-hand side pages, the page number is printed. This is commonly repeated throughout all acoustic magazines, which allows it to become a house style of the magazine that the TA will recognize. There is a whole page that has writing on it; I feel the page of white gives a clean and pure look to the magazine. The article itself is in the form of a Q + A which allows the audience to get to now his artist better, by doing this she is creating a special bond through shared knowledge that only people who buy the magazine will know.

The medium of the article is conversational as it is a conversation between the star and the interviewer, these are clearly distinguished between as the interviewer's questions are written in bold, and the star has regular writing.  The domain of the DPS is to entertain and inform. The register of the text is somewhat formal with some aspects of informality. Laura Mulvey stated women are viewed for the male pleasure, in the picture used on the DPS she is presented with makeup on to appeal to men.

Words Associated With Acoustic - Wordle -

This was my first attempt at a wordle, I used all the words I could think off that are associated with acoustic.

How My Contents Page Research Has Influenced My Planning

The headers used incorporate simple colors and fonts which I fell give a really clean and prestigious look. I like how the contents page writing is aligned to the right hand side, this breaks conventions which is very rebellious and appeals to a young TA. The studio shots have given me ideas for poses for my model in my magazine. I will need to uses both formal and informal language for my magazine as I need it to be sensible yet appealing for my TA. I love the images of guitars this works really well as a convention. I will use white backgrounds as I feel it gives a really clean and good look. On all contents pages that has men playing guitars a majority of the time they are wearing shirts with the top button undone, my star will have his does up to break this relaxed convention.

How My Front Cover Research Has Influenced My Planning

My first analysis was of a rock magazine, which was a very rebellious magazine. It used dark tones that I feel worked really well for the dark type of music. If any of my magazines is of a dark nature the use of dark tones will work excellently. It uses multiple profanities which I feel works perfectly for a magazine that would be targeted towards young people. The use of explosions in it added to the male orientation of the magazine. My second analysis appealed to me in different ways. I really like how freely the artists names were displayed around the front cover this gives a feeling of how young the magazine is which appeals to the young target audience. The colours used were really appealing, they were very vibrant and stood out to me however the poses they were in did not appeal to me very much as I found them to be quite intimidating. The fact that it uses men and women shows diversity, which really appeals to me and will appeal to men and women of the young age. My third analysis was very simple however I feel simplicity is the highest form of sophistication. It uses plain colours, which I feel is great as it will not be hard on the eyes. The use of banners give a professional look, which is what I, will want to use too. It uses a 3 colour scheme, which keeps it simple yet prestigious.

Research: Masthead Font - Audience Research -

I created this sheet and asked close family and friends which name they preferred, I then went back to my computer template and filled in the results electronically. A font called The Unknown is what I will use.

Confirmed Masthead

The masthead I have chosen to go with is Apex. Out of the three I came up with, this was a personal favourite of mine. After I conducted my audience research to find out which name they preferred most it became apparent quickly as to which name they wanted, Apex.

My next task is to conduct TA research to find out which font style and look suits the branding the best. I've had a look on 1001 freefonts and think i will go for something like this however, i still want to spend more time on this.

Masthead - Audience research -

I created this sheet and asked close family and friends which name they preferred, I then went back to my computer template and filled in the results electronically. Apex will be the name of my acoustic pop music magazine.

Planning: Possible Mastheads

Possible names for my magazine masthead are:

Abstract. - I feel this name will represent my magazine well as it will hint at the fact that everything within the magazine has reached a deeper meaning which further implies there is more to it and it is worth reading. The definition of abstract is "existing in thought or as an idea but not having a physical or concrete existence." I feel this is a great word to represent my magazine as it allows the reader to understand that my magazine isn't like a normal issue of a acoustic magazine that they would expect to see, hence the term abstract.

Apex. - This term would connote that my magazine is at its pinnacle which would entice the reader to begin looking into the magazine The word Apex also derives from the term Apex Predator which is a predator at the top of the food chain which implies that out of all the magazines created around my genre my magazine is at the top.

Power. - This term in its self would represent the true nature and force behind my magazine. To have power is to have influence and this is what I want my magazine to have on the reader, I aim to influence.

2] I like the images of guitars, i think this works well as a convention
3] I like the white clean look of white backgrounds

Research: Analysis Of Contents Page - 1 -

Research: Analysis of a DPS - 1 -

How this Research has influenced my planning and creativity.

1] I love the 3 colour scheme
2] I really like how dark it is.
3] The graphology and what it represents is amazing.

Planning: Initial Ideas And Creativity Post

The genre I have chose is Acoustic I have experience as when I was younger I used to play acoustic guitar so I have personal experience with the genre, this means I also have a guitar at home to bring in for my model to use in the photo shoot. My star will be Connor MacMillan, he will be wearing a shirt and jeans which is very casual which will adhere to the traditional convention of a acoustic magazine. He will be stood with a acoustic guitar which will obviously link to the genre. the photos will be taken in a studio setting to show how prestigious the magazine is. The photos will be taken on the18th of October 2016 at my sixth form, this is because my sixth form are having an open evening, in this evening they will be holding a photo shoot for us to get photos for our magazines.

My DPS will be about Connor and his come up (his rise to fame) it will display all the key points in his life that have had an effect on the way he is as a person and the effect it has had on his music. Richard Dyre said that "A star is an image, not a real person, that is constructed" The way Connor will be portrayed will be constructed by me, his back story will also be constructed by me which links to Richards Dyres representation theory. My magazine will appeal to people of the ages between 16 and 22, the magazine will have to be youthful yet refined to show the true nature of acoustic without "boring" my TA. My star is 16 years old which will appeal to the younger years as there may be things in Connors life that they can relate to.

The colours used will be very light to portray a very reputable magazine that is professional and distinguished I will use a sans serif font which will also exhibit how renowned the magazine is. The light colours will connote to god to show purity and will also link to my stars (Connor) religious beliefs. it will also link to one of Connors most popular songs "Dear God" in which he tells his fans the things he discusses with god over night.

Some of the conventions frequently used in acoustic magazines that i will follow are: Online subscription, Masthead 1/5th of the page usually in red, blue or green.

Sunday 16 October 2016

Planning: Photo Shoot Plan

The pictures that i will be taking will be used for my Front Cover, Contents and DPS.
The photo shoot will take place at Brigg sixth form on the 18th of october 2016 at 4:00pm
The name of my model is Connor MacMillan and he will be wearing a red checked shirt, black jeans and plain black shoes, he will also be holding a red and black guitar. I will be doing a range of shots including Low angle, Mid shot and long shot all in different poses with the guitar next to and in front of my model i will also take shots of my model sat down on a stool. and in my shots i will try to get my model centre frame. My model will be wearing red which is a conventional colour of an acoustic magazine. I intent for my TA to read the pictures of my model as a man who as come from a struggle but still managed to work his way up to becoming an Apex Predator in the game aka the acoustic genre.

Research: Links, Synergy + Brand Identity.

Metal Hammer uses similar fonts throughout the front cover and contents page. The same edgy writing creates a brand identity for the audience as they will recognise the edgy look that is presented. The front cover also uses a lot of black however the contents pages uses a lot of red and the front cover does not.

Monday 3 October 2016

Research: Acoustic - Issue 123 October 2016 - Analysis 3 -

Personally I feel that the most outstanding feature is passenger himself as is he is the very centre of the magazine and takes up the full front cover.

The masthead is located at the top of the page and it takes up a small proportion of the page, the masthead is in a plain white colour, I feel this is a good colour to have as it stands out from the rest of the page yet it is easy on the eyes. The masthead is in a Sans Serif font which hints at the simplicity of the magazine. However, I feel that this is a very good look for the magazine as I believe in what Leonardo De Vinci said "Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication."

There are 4 cover stories on the front cover, two of the cover stories are written in sans and the other two are written in Sans Serif which I feel hints at the magazines diversity, this is also implied through the fonts different sizes however the change in sizes are not drastic. The fonts are very plain and simple yet very elegant and refined which i feel represents the genre perfectly.

The magazines target market is male and women of a much older and mature age, even though that magazine uses a lone male on the front cover there is evidence of female interviews given within the cover stories. There is a red banner at the very top that contains a cover story which follows a traditional convention of a magazine. There is also 3 banners in front of passenger, I feel this takes away some of the prestige of the magazine and I will not do this on my magazine. The two cover stories that are written in serif are given subheadings that are written within red banners. The main colours used are white and red. the white masthead is the same on most magazines with a few acceptations and the use of red adds a sophisticated look to the magazine which fits perfectly as some of the connotations of the colour red are: compassion, beauty, success, desire and ambition. the repeated use of a white masthead gives the magazine a recognisable house style that the audience can clearly see in any shop.

The magazine makes me want to buy it as I love the simplicity of the front cover, it really grabs my attention. The front cover includes a barcode, the company logo as they are the ones who published the magazine. The image does relate to the masthead as passenger has an acoustic guitar on his back which shows the reader why he is on the magazine. Passenger is engaged in eye contact with the camera which gives a special relationship between the reader and him. Passenger is stood up right with his arms slightly in front of him I can see this as the picture was taken as a long shot. the chest of \passenger is covered by text but this is it. the rest of the text is either around him or behind him which shows his importance. The picture is sharp and clear and in color in addition the background is in focus. Also, the background is not cluttered. This photo was taken in a studio setting which adds the the professional look. The guitar on his back signifies his purpose on the magazine front cover and also gives the audience a clue as to what he is being featured for.

How this research has influenced my planning and creativity.
1] Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.
2] Plain colors, I wont use ones that are hard on the eyes.
3] Use banners to give a professional look.
4] Use a 3 color scheme which keeps it simple yet prestigious.

Research: XXL - Issue Summer 2015 - Analysis 2 -

The most outstanding feature of the magazine is the big group of artists gathered in the middle of the cover. The masthead is at the top left of the magazine, XXL adheres to conventions by repeating this by doing this they are also creating a brand identity. The masthead only takes up a small proportion of the magazine and part of it has been placed behind the group of young artists. The masthead is a red box with the letters 'XXL' written in white, this could suggest a theme of passion as the company XXl are passionate about the style of music they make. The masthead is written in sans serif which is repeated throughout all the magazines. However, all the other text that is displayed on the front cover ( the artists names and feature story) are written in serif, this gives a more relaxed feel to the magazine as this magazine would be targeting the younger generation. There is only one feature story and there are no cover story's by doing this XXl are challenging a conventions but upon doing so they are showing how rebellious rap music can be as traditionally rap music was used to give black people a voice when they were oppressed.

The font style and size varies throughout the front cover to show the diversity of the multiple rappers/artists they have incorporated into their front cover. I feel the font does represent the genre of rap music as I feel it gives people freedom to say what they want in any way they want, the font comes across as hand written which gives a sense of freedom.

The magazine is intended to appeal to male and females that are aged between 16 - 21, I know this as the front cover uses male and female rappers and has labelled them as the 'Freshman class of 2015' which shows them as a young group of individuals as the freshman is given to people who are in their first year of high school. The front cover uses a blue splatter shape instead of a banner this also links to the freedom that the genre of rap portrays, this is a convention that is used to meet a younger target audience this makes it more appealing to the younger generations as it makes the magazine look more rebellious. The banners are slightly transparent which allows me to still see the the main image through it. The main colours are blue and red. However the colours of the masthead are red and white which is repeated throughout their magazines which creates a recognisable brand identity.

The magazine makes me feel compelled to buy it as the amount of artists and the front used on the names really appealed to me. The magazine includes a barcode with an issues, the price and a web address for the buyer to follow.

All of the artists are looking at the camera which adheres to the convention. The group are all sat together arranged as if in a class photo which links to the feature story 'Class of 2015'.

The photo is a long shot that I cropped. Only a small section of the image is covered by the writing but it is slightly transparent which allows me to see the image behind the text. the picture is very sharp and clear, professionally taken. The background is a plain white background that is in focus. The image is also coloured. All the models are wearing clothes that are associated with young rappers which links to the young target audience as they try to dress like the latest rappers as they feel they are very hip. The photo was taken in a studio which is a professional setting.

Perkins says that 'stereotypes are not simple' when people see a group of ethnic minorities they look for things such as turned baseball caps and bandanas which this image adheres to. However, they are also wearing shirts and gold chains and expensive shoes which can symbolise RnB however, the check shirts are not what people would automatically assume for this group to be wearing.

How this Research has influenced my planning and creativity.

1] I really like how freely the names of the artists are displayed.
2] The colours used are very appealing to me.
3] The blue colour splat is something I could use.
4] I didn't like the poses they are in.
5] the fact it uses men and women appeals to me as it shows the diversity.
